Aiptek Pencam Trio HD Review

May 7th, 2010

The Aiptek Pencam HD Trio is Aiptek's most innovative hd pocket camcorder. At only 4 inches tall, and skinny as a candy bar, the Pencam HD is a must have for on the go video.

Until recently, the Pencam has been Aiptek's defining product. Thin as a candybar, with high definition quality, and the ability as a voice recorder, mp3 player, and digital camera, this little gadget has a lot of functionality in a small package.

The model is the PenCam Trio HD, and it comes in a variety of colors including red, blue, silver and black.

It has a 1/2.5" CMOS Image Sensor and its 5.0 Megapixel(MP) weighs in at a whopping high quality camera quality.

The camera comes with internal storage in a 2gb or 4gb model, with the 4 gigabyte model providing nearly 2 hours worth of video. And with the ability to playback your masterpieces on the 1.1" OLED screen, you won't miss a second of your video or cameras.

On the lacking side, is its zoom is only a 3x digital zoom, and it might as well not be there, as when used the image and video suddenly becomes grainy. Another quip is the poor quality indoors. Aiptek has compensated this with an external LED light that one can turn on at the flip of the switch, and includes an Auto whitebalance function.

For your recording format your only choice is 720p mode, but hey that's high def. The results you will download to your computer is AVC H.264 (This is Apples .MOV format). With your video your resolution is 2592 X 1944 (or rougly 5 MP).

Another great thing Aiptek does that other camcorder makers don't is include all the necessary cords needed including a USB cable and HDMI cable. You also charge your camcorder directly through the USB on your computer. The HDMI works with most HD TV's but don't be surprised if your tv does not recognize it. In this case you will have to transfer data to your computer and burn to a DVD or other format.

With a 950 mAh Lithium Polymer Rechargeable battery, your battery's life will last for hours.

Along with MP3, and the ability to put as much music in it as you want, you can also record notes into the camcorder, and playback on the computer for programs like Dragon's Naturally Speaking. A great way to work more efficiently, and jot down those quick thoughts and ideas.

Using the provided easy to use software you can also upload to video sites like Youtube in a snap!

Here is an example video of the HD Trio's quality:

PROS: Lightweight and portable, HD video MP3 and 5 MP photos, good outside quality, easy to use, CHEAP!

CONS: Poor indoor quality, have to charge through computer, external memory only, terrible digital zoom

I love my Pencam Trio HD, and I think you will too, BUT only if you can get it at a deal. It retails for $149, but I got mine for $42 + free shipping on Amazon. Amazon changes up their price like all the time, so check back often, and if you can snag it for under $75, I highly recommend it.
